Why Your Dispensary Can't Advertise on Google or Facebook

Where cannabis advertising is actually allowed, and what to use in place of the platforms that turn you away.

5 min read

If you've tried to run a Google Ads campaign for your dispensary, you already know how it ends. The ad gets rejected, or the account gets suspended. Meta works the same way. So does TikTok.

This isn't a setting you missed or a policy you can talk your way around. The largest ad platforms in the country have decided they won't sell ad space to businesses that sell cannabis, even in states where cannabis is legal.

Why the platforms say no

Cannabis is still illegal at the federal level. Google, Meta and TikTok operate nationally, set their ad policies nationally, and would rather turn down the whole category than manage state-by-state rules.

For them, dispensary ad revenue is small. The risk of getting it wrong is not. So the answer is no, and it will stay no until federal law changes.

What that leaves most operators doing

  • Posting organic content on social media and hoping the account doesn't get flagged
  • Paying for listings on cannabis directories, next to every competitor in town
  • Running ads on cannabis-only websites that reach people who already have a favorite store
  • Spending nothing on paid media at all

None of these gets you in front of new customers at scale. Directories and cannabis sites mostly reach people who have already picked a store. Organic social is capped by the platform.

Where cannabis advertising is allowed

Programmatic advertising networks that accept cannabis let your ads run on mainstream websites and apps: news sites, sports sites, weather apps, streaming TV. Before an ad is served, the network confirms the viewer is 21 or older.

That's the difference that matters. Your ad shows up where adults already spend their time, not in a cannabis corner of the internet. And because it's programmatic, you choose who sees it: people in your trade area, people who visited a competitor, people who came to your store before.

What to look for in a network

  • Guaranteed 21+ targeting, not "we try to"
  • Placements on quality mainstream sites, not mostly cannabis sites
  • Reporting you can see any time, including store visits
  • Minimums a single location can actually afford

The short version

Google won't take your money. Neither will Meta or TikTok. That's fixed. What you can control is whether you use the channels that do accept cannabis, and whether you measure what they bring back.
